How do Super Bowl squares work?
- Draw the grid. Make a 10 by 10 board. One team goes across the top, the other down the side.
- Fill the boxes. Each player writes their name in one or more of the 100 boxes.
- Draw the numbers. Only after every box is taken, draw the digits 0 to 9 at random for the top row and again for the side. This keeps it fair, because nobody knows which numbers they will get when they pick a box.
- Check each quarter. At the end of the first, second and third quarters and at the final score, look at the last digit of each team’s score. The box where those two digits meet wins.
Example: if the score after the first quarter is 10-7, the winning box is where 0 on the first team’s side meets 7 on the other team’s side. If it ends 24-17, the final winner is the 4 and 7 box.
Common squares rules to agree on first
- Overtime: most groups count the final score, including overtime, as the last winner.
- Empty boxes: decide before the game what happens if a winning box was never claimed. Many groups roll it over to the next quarter.
- Prizes: a common split gives a smaller prize for each of the first three quarters and the biggest prize for the final score. For a family party, snacks, chores or bragging rights work just as well.
- Reverse squares: some boards also pay the box with the two digits swapped, so more people win.
What are the best numbers in Super Bowl squares?
Because football points come in 3s and 7s, scores ending in 0, 7, 3 and 4 come up far more often than others, and boxes with two of those digits are the ones to hope for. Scores ending in 2 and 5 are among the least common. Since the numbers are drawn after the boxes are claimed, though, it all comes down to luck, which is why squares is fun for everyone.
